Each year the Contra Costa County Board of
Supervisors recognizes individuals or groups that have significantly
contributed towards reducing substance abuse in Contra Costa County
communities. This year, the Friends of Discovery Counseling Center will be
presented with the “People Who Make a Difference Award” at the Supervisors’
Board meeting on Tuesday, May 17th.
For 38 years, The Friends of Discovery
who operate The Thrift Station, located at the Crossroads of Danville, 486 San
Ramon Valley Boulevard, have supported the Discovery Counseling Center of the
San Ramon Valley and contributed over $6 million to the Center’s
operation. In 1973, a group of women saw a need in the San Ramon Valley
for help with substance abuse and mental health issues for children,
adolescents, adults and families. By starting out with garage sales, they
were able to cultivate and grow into a thriving business with all proceeds
benefitting the Discovery Counseling Center in Danville. Today, a
group of 115 active volunteers called “The Friends of Discovery” manage and
coordinate the efforts of those who give their time and expertise to the Thrift
Station.
Discovery Counseling Center provides high quality, affordable substance abuse
and mental health services to members of our community. At the current
time, Discovery Counseling Center of the San Ramon Valley contracts with Contra
Costa County’s Alcohol and Other Drug Services to provide two distinct alcohol
and other drug prevention programs and one alcohol and other drug treatment
program. Discovery Counseling Center also has over 20 interns who provide
services within the School Based Intervention Program, which provides a mental
health counselor to each school in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District
and individual, couples and family therapy in the Danville clinic, located in
the Town and Country Shopping Center.
Without
the efforts of the volunteers and their passion to want to improve the
well-being of members of the community, the Discovery Counseling Center of the
San Ramon Valley would not be able to provide much needed services. The
Friends’ support and dedication is truly invaluable to providing the
services that the Discovery Counseling Center of the San Ramon Valley
brings to the community. If you are interested in donating gently-used clothes
or household items or in bargain shopping, stop by the Thrift Station, Monday
through Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00. The Friends are also looking for new
members; if would like to volunteer, call 925.820.1988 for more information.
