October 4–10, 2026, is Mental Illness Awareness Week, a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage conversations about mental health. Discovery Counseling Center is proud to join NAMI in recognizing this important week and its 2026 theme, Turning Science Into Hope.
Mental health care continues to evolve as research deepens our understanding of mental health conditions. Just as important are the voices of people with lived experience. When individuals and families share their experiences, they help researchers, clinicians, and communities better understand what meaningful support can look like.
Small Actions Can Make a Difference
Supporting mental health doesn’t always require knowing exactly what to say. Sometimes it begins with a simple check-in:
“How are you doing?”
“Want to talk?”
“I’ve been thinking about you.”
Listening without judgment, staying connected, and making room for honest conversations can help create a more supportive community.
For parents and caregivers, giving children and teens opportunities to talk about how they’re feeling can be especially important. Ask open-ended questions, listen, and resist the urge to immediately solve the problem.
Support Can Look Different for Everyone
Mental health conditions are treatable, and there is no single path to care. Support may include therapy, medication, peer support, healthy routines, community resources, or a combination of approaches.
For more than 55 years, Discovery Counseling Center has provided mental health support to individuals and families throughout the San Ramon Valley. We offer affordable therapy based on a sliding scale as well as FREE Support Groups for members of our community.
Our message during Mental Illness Awareness Week is to keep learning, listening, checking in, and connecting.
